FAIR TRADE & LOCAL ECONOMIES WORK TOGETHER
The market is fundamentally out of balance. Those with the most power are getting more and more of the benefit from the direct and indirect labor of the least powerful in the supply chain. Farmers and artisans aren‘t given a fair chance to trade their way out of poverty. They face unfair trade rules and crushing pressure of lower prices and a race to the bottom to fuel a consumer market in the global north that demands cheaper and cheaper products.
Fair Trade is a challenge to the conventional model of trade. It requires direct, long-term relationships between producers and businesses in a market where, today, faceless short-term deals are the norm. Fair Trde encourges consumers to act in solidarity with producers by consciously choosing to pay the real costs for products. And it requires communities everywhere to push for a marketplace where producers, consumers, and businesses all have a place at a more quitable table.
(Excerpted from Co-op America‘s Year-End Report ‘05)
We at Martindale‘s are choosing to build direct long-term relationships with our producers, as we can. Products in the store that are "fairly traded" and "Buy Local" have shelf signs indicating their status.
