Aromatherapy on the Road: Vacationing with Essential Oils

Planning a vacation this year? When packing your bags, leave a little space for an aromatherapy travel kit. You’ll be glad you did. Essential oils are fast becoming an essential part of summer travel for more Americans as they hit the road, sea or air. And with good reason: they bring focus and clarity when you’re driving for hours, ward off pesky insects, help you digest food and much more.

In a sea of essential oils, which scents should you pack? More importantly, what should you look for in a good essential oil?

Pack Sensible Scents

Which scents you choose depends on where you’re going and who you’re going with. Going to the shore? Lavender relieves sunburn. Taking a long flight overseas? Citrus family scents – lemon, sweet orange or lemongrass – help you avoid fluid retention. Taking a cruise? Tea tree is great for motion sickness.

Here are a few more ideas to get you started.

Soothing Oils

Lavender – Derived from lavender plants in Bulgaria and France, lavender is an all-around great oil. Known for its calming, balancing and relaxing effects, lavender also soothes burns and sunburns, relieves headaches and quiets rambunctious kids.

If you’re traveling with small children, place a few drops of lavender on their blankets before they go to bed. It works like a charm!

Frankincense – Sourced from fragrant gum resin trees native to Somalia, frankincense is known for its calming, soothing and uplifting qualities. Mix it with carrier oil and rub it on dry or sunburned skin for instant relief. It also helps relieve headaches, stress and muscle tension.

Have a vacation hangover? Frankincense helps rid your liver and kidneys of toxins.

Invigorating Oils

Peppermint – the ancient Greeks and Romans served peppermint after meals to aid digestion. You can, too! This energizing, uplifting and invigorating oil also helps to relieve minor congestion, bloating and nausea.

Traveling to a hot climate? Mix a few drops of peppermint oil with cool water and splash on your body for a natural cool-down.

Pack One from the Citrus Family

  • Lemon – Derived from Argentina, lemon is known for its joyful, calming and refreshing properties. Dilute it with a carrier oil to reduce fluid retention when you’re sitting for a long time.
  • Sweet Orange – Known as the happy oil, sweet orange is rich in molecules that keep us focused and energized. Grown in the U.S.
  • Lemongrass –Freshly cut and partially dried from tropical grasses grown in India, lemongrass’ fresh, strong scent is purifying and relaxing.

Mix a few drops of citrus oils with pure water in a misting bottle and spray away musty odors in your hotel room.

Purifying Oils

Tea Tree – This pungent oil grown in South Africa cleanses, refreshes and purifies. Use it to relieve motion sickness and jet lag and treat insect bites and minor cuts and scrapes.

Mix tea tree oil with an organic carrier oil to make a great hand sanitizer.

Geranium – Grown in Egypt’s Nile Delta, geranium calms frazzled travelers. Geranium also moves fluids trapped in body tissue, especially after long flights.

Mix geranium with an organic carrier oil and apply to skin after showering. It refreshes and soothes dry, travel-worn skin.

Additional scents from Garden of Life include eucalyptus, sourced from trees grown in China and rosemary, grown in the mountains of Tunisia.
