Magnificent Maca Root

High in the Andes Mountains of Peru grows one of the heartiest herbs in the world: the Peruvian maca root. Cultivated in Peru for more than 2,000 years, the maca (Lypedium meyenii) also known as Peruvian ginseng, not only withstands 11,000-foot elevations, it thrives against all odds: poor soil, freezing temperatures and gale force winds. Maybe it’s this incredible ability to survive harsh environments throughout the millennia that gives the maca plant its powerful health benefits and place among the world’s superfoods. From its antioxidant properties to its ability to support stamina, memory and reproductive health, maca is magnificent. Moreover, February is the month for love and romance. What better time than now to try maca? Read on to see why.

Maca: Nutritional Powerhouse

A type of cruciferous vegetable that resembles a turnip, Peruvian maca has a rich, malty flavor with a hint of butterscotch. It is sold as a dried powder. Add it to your smoothies, cereals and healthy snack recipes for a little extra love!

Not only is maca a complete protein and loaded with fiber, vitamins and essential minerals like iron and copper, it’s also an adaptogen that supports you through your daily stressors. Additionally, maca contains all eight essential amino acids, health-promoting phytonutrients and beneficial plant compounds. Vegans love maca for its super nutritional benefits.

Maca for Energy, Memory, Reproductive Health

No matter what your age, you can benefit from maca. Here are some of the ways.

Boosts Stamina and Mood

Need a morning boost, but don’t want coffee jitters? Try maca! People who consume maca report that they feel more energized and awake, without coffee’s  jittery side effects. Additionally, in a study of menopausal women, those who consumed maca experienced less depression and lower blood pressure. Although it isn’t clear why maca boosts energy, scientists believe that it supports a healthy blood sugar response throughout the day.

Enhances Memory and Focus

We all have lapses in memory from time-to-time. A daily dose of antioxidant-rich maca may help. In controlled animal studies using mice, maca helped to improve memory impairment in mice who consumed maca.

Supports Women’s and Men’s Reproductive Health

Studies show that maca boosts women’s and men’s reproductive health. For example, maca can support women going through perimenopause and menopause. If you’re going through menopause and have hot flashes and changes in personal bedroom drive, maca may help. In a double-blind, randomized study of early-postmenopausal women, women who took maca showed a reduction in menopause symptoms.

Not to leave men out of the picture, maca also supports men’s reproductive health, strength and energy.
