Nutrients Relieve Nausea and Vomiting

Nutrients help nausea during pregnancyThe standard treatment for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is dimenhydrinate, commonly known as Dramamine, an over-the-counter drug for motion sickness. Because of its side effects of drowsiness, doctors in this study were interested in finding a safer alternative.

In the study, 135 women less than 16 weeks pregnant took 50 mg of vitamin B6 or dimenhydrinate per day each morning. After seven days, both treatments significantly reduced nausea and vomiting, with dimenhydrinate more effective than vitamin B6. However, fewer than 5 percent of the women in the vitamin B6 group reported drowsiness compared to 53 percent of the women in the dimenhydrinate group becoming drowsy.

Another natural way of managing nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is consuming ginger. Fresh ginger can be made into a tea. Other options include ginger syrup, capsules, or even ginger candy. This latter option only helps if the candy is made from real ginger, not artificially manufactured flavorings.
