Are you looking for a natural way to improve respiratory health? If so, you may consider adding Black Seed Oil to your daily routine. Also known as Nigella Sativa, the oil has been used medicinally for centuries across Asia and the Middle East. Hippocrates, considered the father of early medicine, recommended Black Seed Oil as a remedy for digestive issues. Other cultures believed it to be an almost magical, cure-all remedy.
The primary active compound in this potent elixir is Thymoquinone. This main active ingredient has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Two more compounds in the oil are Limonene which has been studied for its ability to offer asthma support, and B-Sistosterol, which slows and prevents lung fibrosis. Research shows these compounds in Nigella Sativa improve respiratory health.
Recent studies show the following:
Nigella Sativa Oil – Improved Allergy Issues
A recent study examined Black Seed Oil’s effectiveness in treating allergic rhinitis, an annoying and often recurrent condition. In this trial, 68 individuals ranging from 6 to 45 years old received two drops of the oil nasally three times daily for six weeks. The results revealed every single person in the mild severity group showed no symptoms after treatment. However, those classified as moderate or severe saw improvements up to a remarkable 58%. The study showed that Nigella Sativa Oil reduced nasal congestion, sneezing attacks, nasal itching, and runny nose.
Improved Lung Function in COPD patients
Another study examined the effect of Black Seed Oil on pulmonary function tests, inflammation markers, and antioxidant levels in patients with COPD. One hundred participants were randomized into two groups. One group received their standard medication only, while the other was supplemented with botanical oil. After three months, the Nigella Sativa Oil group showed significant improvement in oxidant and inflammatory markers and increased antioxidants.
The study has revealed the potential of Black Seed Oil to be utilized as an adjunct therapy in COPD patients. It offers a range of advantages, including improvements to lung functions and maintenance of oxidant-antioxidant balance. Furthermore, it can reduce inflammation by limiting inflammatory markers.
Improved Asthma Control with Black Seed Oil
Scientists from the University College London and the King Abdulaziz University of Saudi Arabia studied the effectiveness of supplementing with Black Seed Oil to 80 asthmatics. Half the group received 500 mg capsules twice daily for four weeks, while the others took placebo pills. The result showed that those who had taken the black seed supplement demonstrated tremendous improvement in their Asthma Control Test score and pulmonary function compared to subjects on a placebo. It also revealed that Nigella Sativa supplementation improves asthma control with a trend in improved pulmonary function.
Improved Lung Function in COVID patients
Researchers managed a multicenter clinical trial with hospitals across Pakistan to investigate the potential of honey and Nigella Sativa, known as HNS, in treating COVID-19. The participants were adults experiencing moderate or severe symptoms from confirmed coronavirus infection. During the 13-day treatment period, symptom relief and viral elimination showed interesting results. Those receiving HNS had an astonishing reduction in symptoms up to 50% faster than their placebo counterparts.
Further investigation discovered rapid virus clearance after 4 days. Followed by improved scores on day 6, with normal activity restarting in nearly 64% of participants and hospital discharge for half the severe cases compared to just 3% taking placebos. The death rate among those supplemented with HNS decreased four-fold more than the placebo group without any reported adverse effects.
Honey and Nigella Sativa together prove to be an effective ally against COVID-19. Not only did it reduce symptoms in patients, but it also ensured faster viral clearance with reduced death rates.
If you want to improve your respiratory health, precious oil from black seeds might be an option. Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, Nigella Sativa can soothe airways, reduce congestion, and make breathing easier. After all, this much research stands as a valid holistic approach to improving respiratory health.
